In recent years, guest choreographer I-Fen Tung is obsessed with the chemistry between crowds and dancers. Through site-specific environmental theater, it takes the chance to engage with the public. Within the concept of “60 a minute”, she works with Anarchy Dance Theatre to respond to lessons in life and feelings about time.
Time is invested to balance against human beings.
Do we define time, or the other way around?
Without changes, can we feel time?
People walk in the river of time and memory flows.
Time pushes our bodies forward
and we gasp in white water.
Let’s hold our breath, and pause between gasps.
When time is kept within us, we are the time.
Choreographer’s Note
Dance has occupied the most part of my life.
Movement is my parameter to feel time.
I have been thinking over the past few years. As an artist, what can I do to the world or the society. I believe that empathy is the key. All human beings share historical burdens, and no one is exempted.
Theatre offers a place for viewers to share their time and space together. If we only see existing objects in the world, what brings people to theatres? Dancing turns off our linguistic functions. Performers and viewers communicate via bodily movements, and bodies become our texts. Dancing is unique, as viewers can resonate instantly beyond time or physical calculations. Human perceptions place everything in front of us in temporal contexts. Therefore, we are not within time, because we are the time.
As I play multiple roles over the years, motherhood comes into my life this year. During pregnancy, I really feel the weight of time, and every moment doesn’t belong to you anymore. Since the beginning of pregnancy, embryo cells multiply. Every system in this new life grows within one month, and we can detect heartbeats by the fifth week. Time is presented in my life in a very different form, so it’s especially meaningful to produce works about time.
